CRAA planting huge trees to 33' tall in 2002!

The Credit River Anglers Association completed two mature tree reforestation projects as a demonstration for future tree plantings using large trees. The mature trees, most over 20' tall and some exceeding 30' in height have been planted in two parks, Streetsville Memorial Park and Glen Williams Community Park within five metres of the river where no trees have grown for decades. The large trees were planted at these sites for several reasons such as ice damage and park user impact that prevents small trees from becoming established.

Mayor Hazel McCallion joined CRAA for the first major tree planting on April 20, 2002 to celebrate CRAA's Earth Day event. Volunteers planted 75 mature trees to 33 feet tall and another 1,000 smaller trees. Press coverage at the event was excellent, with City TV, CFTO and Global TV all showing 30 to 45 second time slots on the 6 o'clock news that evening.

On May 25 CRAA volunteers and Mayor Kathy Gastle from Halton Hills planted 27 mature trees in Glen Williams Park. The largest trees had soil balls exceeding 600 pounds in weight.

Funding for this project was covered through a generous grant from the North American Herb and Spice Co from the US, as well as CRAA, MNR-CFWIP, City of Mississauga and Halton Hills..

The events have been a tremendous success, turning open sections of river with no forest cover into full forest with two layers of tree growth developing. The larger trees (2" to 4" caliper) are large enough to withstand ice damage and will help to protect the smaller trees planted amongst them. All trees have been wired for balance, had wire mesh placed to prevent beaver damage and will be watered and fertilized for the summer to ensure maximum survival

Based on the great success of these projects CRAA intends to expand the mature tree planting to other difficult planting sites along the river with a target of up to 1,000 trees, estimated to be a $150,000 project which will include the planting of another 10,000 smaller trees as well. Other sites we plan to use this method on include:
  • Glen Williams - 10th line
  • Glen Williams - Papermill Dam
  • Norval · Eldorado Park
  • Steeles Avenue
  • Churchville Park · Meadowvale Park
  • CVC property at Old Derry Rd
  • Sanford Farms (If land owner agrees)
  • Streetsville Park (upper section)
  • Erindale Park

Corporate Donations - This is a great way to help the community, the environment and have your name on signs describing the project to be seen by thousands of people and the media. Please contact CRAA via e-mail (info@craa.on.ca) for more information on making a donation that you can use as a tax deduction.
